Cooking Campout this weekend - sign up today

Posted on Mar 18 2018 - 7:25pm
We have scheduled the Cooking Campout! Everyone, Scouts and Parents alike, should get excited the third annual version of this great event! Below is more information.
Date: March 23-25, 2018
When: Drop-Off at 6:00 PM on March 23
          Pick-Up at 10:30 AM on March 25
Where: Pohick Bay Regional Park, Camp Wilson Group Campground

The weather report isn't confirmed, but remember this is cold weather camping. Please be prepared for cold temperatures and precipitation. See the attached cold weather camping list.
Carpooling among parents is encouraged, but the troop is not organizing transportation.
Please return the attached permission slip and $10 to Scoutmaster Scheeler or Assistant Scoutmaster Bornmann by Monday, March 19. Checks can be made payable to Troop 301.
We still need volunteers to act as judges for the cooking competition. This is a great opportunity for parents to get involved and eat some great food provided by the scouts. This does not require you to camp with the troop. We still need three (3) judges for Saturday Breakfast, Saturday Lunch, Saturday Dinner and Sunday Breakfast. Please e-mail Assistant Scoutmaster Bornmann (colin.bornmann@gmail.com) your availability to judge. We will fill the judging spots on a first come, first served basis.
If you have the Dutch Oven Cookbooks that were assigned to patrols two summers ago, please bring them to the meeting on Monday.
If you have the metal cooking awards that were awarded to patrols after the first cooking campout, please bring them to the meeting on Monday.

Goshen Registration Information

Posted on Mar 18 2018 - 7:23pm
It's time to register for our 2018 summer adventure at Goshen's beautiful Camp Marriott (7/14-21).  This is a wonderful opportunity for the boys to enjoy lakeside camping and to earn lots of merit badges.
The discounted early-bird fee of $360 is available if I get your payment by April 6.  For a special bonus, everyone that pays by April 6 gets a free Goshen ball cap.  While the fee includes all meals, it does not include the $50 round trip bus transportation option.  I recommend the bus since camp is 3.5 hours away. You can pay for camp and the bus in one check.  Checks can be dropped-off/mailed to my house (734 S. Lee Street, Alexandria VA 22314) or look for me at one of the Troop's regular meetings.  Please make checks out to “Troop 301 BSA.”  Camp fees increase to $400 between April 7-May 11 and to $440 after May 11.
Along with your payment, I also need information from you so that I can register scouts for their desired merit badge activities.  As a planning guide, I’ve attached a link to the 2018 Program Schedule below.  Based on the program schedule on page 12, please send me a list of your scout’s desired activities for each time block available (i.e., 9am-Session 110am-Session 211am-Session 3, 2pm-Session 4, 3pm-Session 5, 4pm-Session 6).  Since activities fill up on a “first come” basis, doing this early is the best way of ensuring that scouts reserve space in their desired activities.  A few activities, such as Shotgun and All Terrain Vehicles, have extra fees ($40 and $50, respectively).  Please include any extra fees in your payment to me.
All new scouts who join the Troop this spring will be enrolled in the New Scout Quest program (designed to introduce scouting fundamentals) and they will select their merit badge activities at camp. All I need to register new scouts is their payment for camp/bus.
There are a number of activities for older scouts.  These include Welding, Small Boat Sailing, and BSA Lifeguard.  See the Program Schedule for more details.  Note that the ATV program is available ONLY to scouts who will be 16 years old while we’re at camp.
Everyone attending camp must have BSA forms A, B, and C (“C” must be completed by a medical practitioner) dated after July 21, 2017 (i.e. within one year).  Please also note that Goshen requires a Camp Risk Advisory form to be signed by a parent.  All medical forms are at the link below.
If, after reviewing all the info in this email, you have questions, please send me a private note:  tbright.va@gmail.com.

Assimilation Campout

Posted on Mar 18 2018 - 7:23pm

The annual Troop 301 Assimilation Campout will take place from 13-15 April at the Camp Wilson Group Camping Area (Areas A4 and A5) at the Pohick Bay Regional Park in Lorton, VA. This annual event is the first campout for the new scouts (those that will be crossing over in the Spring) and is designed to facilitate the new scouts’ transition from the Pack to the Troop. The older scouts (2nd year and above) will leave St. Mary’s School parking lot and travel to the park and make camp on Friday. On Saturday, the 1st year scouts (those who crossed over in 2018), will arrive at the campground around 9am. The focus of the campout is fusion of the 1st year scouts into the troop following the patrol method. Older scouts will teach the 1st year scouts using the EDGE method and will cover topics such as campsite set up, cooking, knots, first aid, patrol method familiarization and others. Following a full day of fun filled activities, we will focus on a scout prepared dinner and campfire. On Sunday we will break camp at approximately 10:00am and return to St. Mary’s School parking lot. Scouts should be available for pick-up around 11:30. All Scouts will participate in organizing the Troop Trailer and gear prior to being released from this event.

Committee Meeting on Monday, March 12

Posted on Mar 11 2018 - 5:33pm

As many of you know, Rob Hood turned over his Committee Chairmanship last month.  I’ve volunteered to take his place and will continue to help set policy, assist Dan Scheeler and the scouts with outdoor programming/planned activities, as well as the general business of the troop.
